Norway has been a leading and significant player in international shipping for more than 150 years. Our small country on “the top of Europe”, with less than a thousandth of the world’s population, is a superpower on the seas, controlling approx. 10 per cent of the world’s merchant fleet. And more important, the complete spectrums of maritime activities that have emerged from more traditional shipping operations enjoy strong and dominating positions in the international shipping markets.

Norway is one of the very few countries, which has a complete, all-encompassing maritime industrial environment.  This is the so-called Norwegian Maritime “cluster” which ranges from ship owners, brokers, banks, shipyards, a classification society, maritime research, design and engineering, maritime offshore oil-related activities, specialized law firms, to leading international marine/P & I/energy insurers and underwriters.

In marine and energy insurance, Norwegian companies claim a 25 per cent share of the global market, and Norway classifies 15 per cent of the world tonnage. The Oslo Bourse is the world’s largest shipping exchange, which accounts for about a fifth of the market in the number of listed companies, total market value and share turnover.

Marsh Marine & Energy AS is a direct continuation of the family-owned company Arvid Bergvall AS (joined forces with Sedgwick in early 1994, and a member of the Marsh Group in 1998) with offices in Oslo and Kristiansand, and a subsidiary in Gothenburg.  Since the creation of Arvid Bergvall AS back in 1896 we have always enjoyed the position as the leading and most experienced and professional broking house in Norway.

We are honoured and proud to be the preferred brokers for Scandinavian and international ship owners, ship managers, shipping banks, shipyards, oil companies, drilling contractors and other contractors.

The insurance market is very demanding and changing rapidly.  Whilst underwriting capacity remains abundant, fewer and fewer leading marine underwriters seem to control the overall capacity.  The ultimate needs of our clients to rely on a professional and long-term partner in dealing with the markets and the underwriters become even more obvious in this context.

The continuous globalisation and changing of international markets make it even more important for our clients to have their operation and risks professionally analysed and presented.  Updated market knowledge is essential and enables us to quickly discover and adapt to the preferred market trends and a client of Marsh would always benefit from the access to the market leaders.

Through our global network of Marsh offices in more than 100 countries we have access to all markets worldwide.
